Artist Profile

Rediet Sisay-Self Portrait

Rediet Sisay

My name is Rediet Sisay. I am a studio artist, graphic, craft and interior designer. As an artist and designer I do paintings, create new designs with the existing traditional crafts made of beads, leather, poetry, wood, metal and the like.

My passion for art started when I was 9 years old. Since then I have learned the different skills in painting and craft making. Through the different skills that I acquired I started creating my own artwork pieces. I have a big dream of reflecting the modern art concept in to a real life furniture, accessories and apparels for contemporary lifestyle.

Two years ago I started a small business operating from home named “Redi’s Collection” and presented my products in different exhibitions and Bazaar’s. My products are clay pots/vases, lamp shades, jewellery boxes, candle holders, carpets, jewellery with Ethiopian beads and icons, simple contemporary furniture and mixed media paintings.

Using the above products I made interior designs for coffee houses, restaurant and shop displays. To produce the designs I have used Ethiopian traditional raw materials like poetry, beads, leather, baskets, textile (called “Tibebe” in Ethiopia) to create a modern designs in the form of furniture, accessories, apparels, wall mounted installations and mixed media paintings.

In addition to running my business I took part in the different voluntary activities in beautifying an orphanage compound took part in street painting to create awareness for the youth about HIV/AIDS, clean and green Addis Ababa(Capital city of Ethiopia) and poverty. I got also an opportunity to do interior design a coffee shop, display shops, office buildings, hotels, guest houses and residence houses. The sculptures that I make follow the traditional clay work and with a theme of “Feelings from Ethiopia”.
