Lemos Djata (1981) -- Fine Art

Artist Profile

Lemos Mamadjã Hipólito Djata is one of the greatest contemporaneous African autodidact painters and sculptors. He holds a degree in Applied Foreign Languages from the University of Évora, where he had strong relationships with the people of Évora. At a young age, he began his artistic activities together with his two brothers Ismael and Issa, creating the group "Irmãos Unidos" in 2000.

Indulged passion for hyperrealist technique made Lemos become a new phenomenon in the art world, conquering a large number of the public.

When we talk about the painter, it’s a pure reminiscence reminding of his "Sorriso do Velho", "Leite de Mãe", "Saltinho", "Desamparo", "Djoma Kosan", "Vaqueira", "Biblioteca Africana" - some of his most famous artwork in contrast with his "Intercâmbio Cultural” (Cultural Exchange) that  was awarded in Spain for his title receiving international recognition.

Lemos is a member of Guinea Bissau Painters Association. He participated in many ateliers, taught painting and performed in countries such as Guinea Bissau, Senegal, Cap Verde, Egypt, France, Portugal and Spain.

"I feel alive when making my art. Somehow painting gave me directions. I like oil paints because of its fluidity and the facility that it provides.  I like the contrast dark-light compositional technique in my paintings. As an artist i make use of every color with exception of ivory black. Human figure is what appears in most of my paintings because i feel like enhancing the concept of humanity. I take the time adequately needed to appreciate and give more detail to my paintings. Music is one of the things that inspire me. It fills the void that is within any artist."
